At PMA Fresh Summit, Apeel Sciences showed organic apples at 6 ½ weeks with its coating and without. The non-treated on the left were clearly smaller and more shriveled than the Apeel treated apples on the right.
Beginning November 1, Sage Fruit Company, LLC, BB #:163180 Yakima, WA, will offer its organic apples with Apeel self-extending coating.
Chuck Sinks, president, sales and marketing, said retail customers may request the treatment, which uses plant-based technology to coat fresh produce and slow the rate of water loss and oxidation.
He said Sage plans to use Apeel on organic Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith and Pink Lady varieties.
“It’s a benefit to both the retailer and consumer,” Sinks said. “It retains water weight more in the store, and that gives a better ring. And then they will be longer lasting and a better eating experience at home.”
The Apeel treated bulk apples will have Apeel stickers on them, as well as on bags for bagged product.
“Apeel has some good POS material,” he said, for in-store promotions.

In August Apeel announced supplier partners for avocados, asparagus, limes and apples.
