 The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, investigated a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections in the fall of 2020. The epidemiology and traceback investigation have determined that the outbreak was linked to leafy greens.

The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, have completed the investigation on two of three multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections in the U.S. this fall.

Food safety work in the produce industry continue to make strides, as recent investigation pilots showed a path toward a quicker, more streamlined traceback process.

This new tool will share information on FDA foodborne illness outbreak investigations, even in their early stages and as soon as FDA begins its response to the outbreak. It will give consumers early awareness of developing multistate outbreaks that are occurring across the United States.

Kristen Pogreba-Brown, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Arizona, said people get frustrated at why food outbreak investigations take so long, but there are many reasons.
