On Monday, dozens of organizations representing consumers, industry leaders, and state and local regulators, including International Fresh Produce Association, Consumer Reports, Stop Foodborne Illness, Consumer Brands Association, and the Association of Food and Drug Officials called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to strengthen leadership and accountability in FDA’s food safety and nutrition program.

Politico, a news agency covering Washington’s Capitol Hill, released a “bombshell investigation” of what it says is one of most incompetent and dysfunctional federal agencies: the Food and Drug Administration. 

The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, investigated a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to Dole packaged leafy greens.

During the February 25 meeting, IFPA was represented by Chief Food Safety & Regulatory Officer Dr. Jennifer McEntire on a panel discussion of the provisions, while Director of Food Safety & Quality Gretchen Wall offered additional testimony.

The FDA, along with CDC, and state and local partners, investigated a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg infections linked to whole, fresh onions imported from the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, in cooperation with the Mexican competent authorities.

According to the CDC, as of February 1, 2022, 17 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes have been reported from 13 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from August 16, 2014 to December 30, 2021 (one case occurred in 2014 and the remaining cases occurred between 2018 and 2021).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a report on its investigation of the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak that caused 31 reported illnesses and four hospitalizations in the U.S. between June and August 2021.

Registration is required to attend the virtual meetings. Registered participants will receive details on how and when to view the public meetings online. 

The U.S. FDA is working to investigate a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections associated with the consumption of packaged salad.

Tackling foodborne outbreaks faster and revealing the root cause are essential for the prevention of future outbreaks. FDA has a plan to do that.
