The deal is part of the discount grocer’s ongoing efforts to convert corporate-owned stores to local ownership. The 32 stores generate annual revenues in excess of $130 million, immediately positioning Yellow Banana as one of Save A Lot’s largest Retail Partners nationwide.

The company currently offers fresh produce in more than 1,300 stores, providing the top 20 items typically sold in grocery stores and approximately 80 percent of produce categories carried by most grocers. Dollar General plans to expand this offering in up to 10,000 stores, including a meaningful number of stores located in food deserts.

The retailer says it will open approximately 100 new locations nationwide in 2021, with a focus on Arizona, California, Florida and the Northeast.

Retailers on Long Island decreased prices considerably after Lidl opened new stores compared to prices collected before Lidl entered the market. The price-cutting effect was more pronounced than previous academic findings about Walmart's entry into a new market where price decreases typically varied between 1% and 2.5 % or 5% at most.

Successes with adding more fresh produce and perishables are pushing the company to accelerate plans to add more fresh produce and expand the DG Fresh self-distribution initiative.

Dollar General’s staggering footprint of 16,000 stores is getting even bigger in 2020. The company plans to add 1,000, remodel 1,500 and relocate 80 stores next year, with continued enhancements for fresh foods.
