In celebration of National Nutrition Month, the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council (USHBC) is encouraging consumers to grab a boost of blue as part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle.

If it is true that “bad news is good news and no news is bad news,” then the avocado industry is doing just fine. Last week was quite a roller coaster for Avocados from Mexico.

Blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry supplies are tightening, which will likely cause prices to rise over the next few weeks.

Last weekend the U.S. government suspended the import of all Mexican avocados “until further notice” after a U.S. plant safety inspector in Mexico was sent a threatening message, which will have significant economic impact for this $3 billion industry at its peak time of year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced the appointment of seven members and 10 alternate members to serve on the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council.

The Chilean office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa) released its fruit bulletin for January-December 2021, showing fresh fruit achieved export sales of 2.62 million tons, equivalent to $5.05 billion FOB.

With three months before the end of the 2021/2022 Peruvian blueberry campaign, which runs from May to April, 215,356 tons have been exported for $1.277 billion, reflecting an increase in volume of 30 percent and value of 26 percent when compared to the previous season.

In the last five years, the demand for food in the U.S. has shown a sustained rise. This was reflected in the increase in imports, going from $53.2 billion in 2017 to $63.5 billion in 2021, reflecting a growth of 19 percent.

Finally, the December holiday pull is towing fresh produce prices out of the Thanksgiving rut. High-end produce categories including grapes, berries, avocados, melons, and asparagus are undergoing additional increases. These items have lower supply due to challenged holiday labor availability.
