Peru saw continued growth in the 2022-23 season, but that may not be the case next season.

The fresh Chilean cherry industry closed the 2022-2023 season with 415,315 tons exported, reflecting a growth of 16.5 percent compared to the previous season.

In 2022, Peru was the world’s leading exporter of blueberries with $1.36 billion in value, surpassing the U.S., Spain, Canada, the Netherlands, and Morocco, according to the Research Center for Global Economy and Business of the Association of Exporters (CIEN-ADEX).

From the beginning of the 2022/2023 campaign in June to March 12, Peru exported 283,000 tons of fresh blueberries, reflecting an increase of 30 percent versus in the same period the previous campaign.

From January to March 12, 2023, Peru exported 35,200 tons of avocado, reflecting an increase of 53 percent compared to the 23,000 tons shipped in the same period the previous year.

Fresh produce imports from Mexico are expected to reach over $53 billion in economic value by 2023, according to a recent report from the Center for North American Studies (CNAS) at Texas A&M University.

During the period January-February 2023, a total of 738,000 tons of Chilean fruit exports were registered, for a value of $2.547 billion FOB, reflecting an increase in the volume exported of 14.3 percent, and in value of 7.3 percent, when compared to the same period last year.

Cherry plantations in Chile have expanded dramatically in the last two decades as export demand has risen, making it the nation’s top tree fruit.

In 2022 Peru had 18,103 hectares of blueberries, which reflected an increase of 11.1 percent compared to the 16,290 hectares registered in 2021.

The latest estimate from the Table Grape Committee of the Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile, the sixth of the season, projects exports to reach 64,518,065 boxes, reflecting a decrease of 13.2 percent compared to the previous season and a decrease of 4 percent in relation to the fifth estimate made less than a month ago.
