Searching for the perfect peach…again

This week in As The Peach Truck Turns…

I feel like I’ve been watching this company a little too closely, but it also keeps coming to my back yard, and I love, love, love in-season stone fruit, so here we go again.

If you recall, I watch for The Peach Truck’s annual summer tour every year so I can arrange my pick-up. This year, again, they decided not to stop in Austin. Bummer.

Then, my husband spotted a retail pack at H-E-B’s Central Market and bought it for me ($10 for just under two pounds…an outrageous price!). The flavor was…meh.

The experience led me down a rabbit hole, questioning whether it’s retail that’s causing the peach problem.

Well, guess what?  The Peach Truck did another 180 and added a stop in Austin on July 13. I put my $45, 12-pound box of peaches in the cart, but wait, there’s more! They offered me a second box for $17. Of course I’m going to take that deal (in hindsight probably not the wisest choice as a case of nectarines fell in my lap and I ended up rolling in stone fruit…but that’s a problem for another video).

So, of course I signed up. I picked up my boxes about 10 minutes after the time started. They give you about an hour window.

I was initially worried because there were few customers there, unlike previous years where there was a huge line and a lot of fanfare.

And, this year it wasn’t THE Peach Truck. It was a wholesale distributor, Houston-based Brothers Produce.

Hey, I know the folks at Brothers and know they do a great job, but The Peach Truck was originally all about simplifying the distribution system. Working with a distributor is adding additional steps. That’s not the model…right?

Well, apparently it is because they also are working with Piazza Produce to do a pickup.

Not gonna lie…I was real skeptical.

And here’s where I eat my (peach) humble pie.

We’ve been gorging on peaches for days. My living room smells amazing. They tasted amazing.

Carry on. Check in with me next week when I go into mourning over the lack of amazing peaches. Or, let me know another kind I need to try.

And then, of course, Big As Yo Face Mango Season is getting ready to start, so there’s always something new coming.
