Peru’s table grape exports continue their upward trend abroad.
In the first three months of the 2023-2024 campaign (October-December), exports amounted to $1.06 billion, representing an increase of 40 percent compared to the same period of the 2022-2023 campaign ($753.7 million), according to the Agro-Export Management of the Association of Exporters (ADEX).
This result is partly explained by the advance of the campaign in the north and south of Peru as a result of weather patterns (Cyclone Yaku and El Niño), hence it cannot be ruled out that it will have a negative impact in January or February; and the greater demand from some Asian countries before the start of the Chinese New Year.
The ADEX’s Agroexports manager, Claudia Solano Oré, said Peru needs to continue advancing on the agenda so that Peru does not give up its global positioning. In the 2022-2023 campaign, Peru was the largest grape exporter in the world, according to the consulting firm Fluctuante (with figures from the USDA).
Solano Oré added that Peru exports more than 50 varieties of grapes, the main one being White Seedless, followed by Red Seedless, Red Globe and Black Seedless.
“Consumers now prefer those that are seedless. However, in Asia they prioritize Red Globe for its flavor and texture,” she said.
According to figures from the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, in the first three months of the 2023-2024 campaign (October-December), the main destination was the U.S., accounting for 47 percent of the total, followed by the Netherlands, Mexico, Hong Kong, China, the UK, Canada, Spain, Taiwan and South Korea.
Of the markets located in the top 20, Hong Kong (130 percent), Dominican Republic (96 percent), El Salvador (87 percent), Mexico (62 percent) and Guatemala (60 percent) stand out for their growth. Likewise, it entered Japan for the first time ($8 million).
The main grape exporting regions are Ica, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, and Arequipa.
In 2023 (January-December) Peru exported grapes for $1.745 billion, representing an increase of 30 percent compared to 2022 ($1.346 billion).
