From January 1 to December 1, 2023, Peruvian exports of fresh table grapes reached 513,545,578 kilos, showing an increase of 29.15 percent compared to the 397,638,966 kilos shipped in the same period of the previous year, the president of the consulting firm Inform@cción, Fernando Cillóniz Benavides, told Agraria.
Cillóniz Benavides highlighted that table grapes are saving Peru’s agricultural export year, given the drop in shipments of blueberries and coffee, which make up the top three of the main agricultural export crops of Peru.
“In 2023, Peruvian exports of table grapes will record a historical record. It is impossible for December to counteract these 11 positive months that have occurred,” he said.
Regarding shipments by region so far this year (until December 1), he said that Piura sent 173,071,510 kilos of grapes (increase of 11.07 percent); Lambayeque, 27,234,863 kilos (increase of 23.47 percent); La Libertad, 28,847,286 kilos (increase of 148.57 percent); Ica, 263,540,667 kilos (increase of 33.48 percent) and Arequipa, 14,690,864 kilos (increase of 88.34 percent).
If analyzed from May 1 to December 1 of this year, exports of fresh table grapes from Peru amounted to 243,817,751 kilos, registering a growth of 46.58 percent compared to 166,333,997 kilos reported in similar period of 2022.
By region, grape shipments in the analyzed period this year behaved as follows: Piura sent 144,872,766 kilos (increase of 7.88 percent); Lambayeque, 20,638,990 kilos (increase of 24.62 percent); La Libertad, 16,670,118 kilos (increase of 697.91 percent); Ica, 48,874,047 kilos (increase of 457.10 percent) and Arequipa, 9,098,222 kilos (increase of 146.72 percent).
In addition, Cillóniz Benavides said that from the beginning of the current 2023/2024 campaign (September 1) until November 30, Peruvian shipments of this fruit totaled 238,009,549 kilos, showing an increase of 53.9 percent versus 154,638,141 kilos shipped in the same months of last season.
In this regard, he explained that in the first 3 months of the current campaign, table grape shipments behaved as follows: September, 16,392,810 kilos (3,393,752 kilos in the same month of the last campaign); October, 76,500,309 kilos (46,676,129 kilos in the same month of the previous season); and November, 145,116,430 kilos (104,568,260 kilos in the same month of last season).
“In addition to the increase in volume, better prices are also being recorded for Peruvian table grapes in international markets,” he said.
