Mushrooms were the big winner in 2022 pizza trends, while pineapples have hit a slump in popularity.
According to the 2023 Slice of the Union report from Slice, the community of independent pizzerias, mushrooms were the topping of the year last year, appearing on 8.9 percent more pizzas than the previous year. On the other side of the pie, pineapples saw a 6.1 percent decline in orders in 2022 from 2021.
The report predicts that pickles will be a top topping in 2023.
“Here’s the dill: Pickle pizza went viral in 2018 and has steadily become a bigger and bigger favorite. This briny pie is most often baked with garlic sauce, topped with mozzarella, and dipped in ranch,” it said.
In state-by-state trends, the report found that Oregon has the highest average pizza price at $26.94, while Oklahoma has the lowest at $12.70. The national average cost of a pizza is $17.81.
Pennsylvania is the state with the most requests for ranch dressing; Massachusetts has the most salad orders; and New Jersey is the state most likely to order pizza with arugula and/or truffle oil.
Earlier this year, the Mushroom Council BB #:161860 highlighted its top dozen recent 2023 food trend forecasts featuring fresh mushrooms, which is a continuation of mushrooms’ growing popularity, after the New York Times named mushrooms the “Ingredient of the Year” in 2022.
