Below freezing weather in the California and Arizona desert areas is causing harvest and packing delays on lettuce varieties.
Markon Cooperative, Inc. BB #:123315 reported on December 16 that temperatures dropped into the upper 20’s to low 30’s (degrees Fahrenheit), with forecasts calling for more cold weather through early next week.
“Harvesting crews for lettuce and other crops were delayed, today, December 16, up to three hours or until heads fully thawed,” Markon Cooperative said. “Harvesting and loading delays can be expected through early next week.”
So far, the icing hasn’t caused significant volume or price volatility.
“No immediate quality impact is expected, but Markon inspectors will be monitoring for ice-related challenges in the days ahead,” the company said.
