Consumer demand for potatoes is causing prices to rise.
F.o.b. prices on Idaho russets have risen several dollars in the past month on all sizes, according to the USDA.
In its weekly Fresh Crop Report, Markon Cooperative {{BB #:123315}} said strong consumer demand is causing stocks to diminish quickly, and they will be depleted by mid- to late May.
“Supplies of large-size 40- to 70-count potatoes continue to tighten,” Markon said March 30. “Current lots are dominated by 80-count and smaller sizes. Burbanks are typically smaller than the Norkotahs, with crops dominated by 80- and 90-count sizes. Norkotahs will normally yield larger potatoes; however, remaining late-season stocks are on the smaller side.”
