Peruvian mango exports to U.S. continue to rise

With Peruvian mango exports to the United States steadily increasing in the recent years, fresh or dry mango exports reached an FOB value of $70.8 million in January 2020, according to figures published by Agrodata Peru.

While these figures represent a dip in comparison to January 2018, when a value of $80.3 million in mangoes were shipped, Manuel Michel, the executive director of the National Mango Board (NMB) BB #:189894 stated during an interview with America Retail that consumption among American consumers increased 68% from 2005 to 2018, and he believes that exports to the U.S. will increase 2-3% this year.

Peru exports mangos to the U.S. most years from January to March.

The United States is the main destination of mango exports from Peru with shipments amounting to $30.5 million in January 2019, amounting to 43% of all shipments, followed by the Netherlands with $19.5 million, South Korea with $4.4 million, Spain with $3.3 million, UK with $3.3 million, Canada with $2.1 million, France with $1.8 million, and Russia with $1.2 million, amongst other export destinations who accounted for smaller amounts.

The Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM) stated to America Retail that during the 2017-2018 campaign Peru exported 204,000 tons of fresh mango, with 70% coming from the Piura region.

The Kent mango has been the most popular variety in the U.S., Canada, Spain, France, UK, Korea among other markets. This statement was also reiterated by the president of the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers (Promango), Angel Gamarra Condori, who stated that the Kent mango is the most demanded variety in the U.S. and European markets.

Agraria, a Peruvian news agency, reports that the main mango exporting companies in 2019 from Peru were Sunshine Expor SAC with sales of $8.36 million, Camposol SA with $4.07 million, Agroindustrias Golden Fresh SAC with $4.04, Dominus SAC with $2.99 million, FLP del Peru SAC with $2.95 million, CC Tropicales SAC with $2.91 million, Frutas de Piura SAC with $2.59 million, Asica Farms SAC with $2.44 million, and Tropical Fruit Trading Peru SAC, among others.
